Portrait of Sarah Mitchell

Sarah Mitchell

Civil Engineer & Construction Estimator

Sarah Mitchell grew up in Manchester, where her father ran a small building firm that handled everything from garden extensions to full house renovations. Weekends often meant tagging along to sites, watching measurements get taken, materials get ordered, and plans get adjusted when something did not quite add up. She did not know it at the time, but that background gave her something most engineering students spend years trying to develop: a practical instinct for how materials behave in the real world.

She studied Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester, graduating in 2013. Her final year project focused on sustainable drainage systems for urban residential developments, which introduced her to the relationship between material quantities, environmental load, and cost. She went on to complete a Master's in Structural Engineering at the University of Leeds in 2015, where her dissertation examined load distribution in prefabricated concrete panels used in social housing projects across northern England.

After graduating, Sarah spent seven years working as a construction estimator and structural site engineer for a mid-size contractor based in Leeds, managing material takeoffs, concrete volume calculations, and supplier cost comparisons for residential and light commercial builds across Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. She joined Bro Calculator to bring that hands-on experience to a wider audience. At Bro Calculator, she writes and reviews all tools in the Construction and Conversion categories, making sure every formula reflects real industry practice and every result is something a contractor, site manager, or confident DIY builder can rely on without second-guessing the math.
